You’ll discover that there’s more than one botanical garden on this drive. Located in Onomea Bay is the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. This 40-acre, paradisiacal valley features 2,000 species of tropical plants, in addition to waterfalls and ocean lookouts. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children. There’s also the World Botanical Gardens, which offers excellent views of Mauna Kea volcano, Kamaee Falls, and the 260-ft.-long Orchid Wall. You can explore the garden, guided or unguided, by foot, via Segway, or with a rousing zipline ride. Prices vary according to the options selected.
The corridor ends at Waipio Valley Lookout, which overlooks the glassy-blue Pacific Ocean. Guided hiking and horseback tours of this area can be tagged onto the end of your drive, as well. They’ll take you deeper into the valley to behold 1,300-ft.-tall Hiilawe Falls, among many other sights, in addition to providing informative narration on the natives that used to live in the valley, including King Kamehameha I.
